Long ago, basket making was primarily done in the winter after food gathering was finished for the year. They were made for necessity and storage for the next gathering of traditional foods.
Not only were the baskets useful as well as beautiful, but they were also used for trading and gifts. A variety of baskets were made, including Cornhusk, Cedar Bark and Klickitat baskets. These baskets carried and stored traditional foods, such as huckleberries, roots and salmon. The making and useage of traditional baskets is still kept alive through classes for Tribal members offered at The Museum throughout the year.
